How to Use AI Tools in Your Internship Without Cheating Yourself

By K. Boopathikumar, CEO & Founder · 1 November 2026 · 6 min read

Most interns now use AI tools, and that is fine. Employers use them too. The question is whether the tool is helping you learn or doing your learning for you.

Ask for explanations, not only answers

When you are stuck, ask why something fails, and ask for a hint before the solution. Try again yourself before asking for more. It feels slower, but this struggle is how the skill stays with you.

Never submit what you cannot explain

If a mentor asks why you chose this approach, you should be able to answer. A simple rule works well: read every line, and rewrite any part you do not understand until you do.

Check everything

AI can sound confident and still be wrong. It may use a library that does not exist or skip a security check.

  • Run the code and test it yourself
  • Try wrong inputs, not only correct ones
  • Ask what could go wrong
  • Never paste passwords, keys or private company data into a public AI tool

Be open about it

If your mentor or company has rules about AI, follow them. Saying "I used AI for the first draft, then fixed these two problems" shows maturity. Read our Code of Conduct to see what counts as original work.
