What Should Students Learn Now That AI Can Write Code?

By K. Boopathikumar, CEO & Founder · 1 November 2026 · 7 min read

AI tools can now write working code in seconds. Students are right to ask what is left for them. The answer is good news: the part of the job that AI does best was never the hardest part.

Finding the real problem

A client rarely knows exactly what they need. A clinic may ask for an app when its real problem is patients who forget appointments. Someone has to ask questions, listen and work out what would truly help. That is engineering, and it starts before any code.

Judging what AI gives you

AI code often works in the demo and fails in real use. You need enough understanding to spot what is wrong, and that means learning the basics properly. If you cannot read code, you cannot check it.

Practise on real cases in our free Engineering Lab, where you find the faulty line in AI-written code.

Skills worth your time

  • Debugging: finding why something fails, step by step
  • Security: thinking like an attacker before one arrives
  • Databases: why a page is fast with 100 rows and slow with 8 lakh
  • Deployment: how software runs on real servers, and what to do when it stops
  • Communication: explaining a problem and a decision in simple words

Should you still learn to code?

Yes. You need to understand code in the same way a civil engineer needs to understand concrete, even when others pour it. Use AI to go faster, but make sure you can explain every line you submit.

Our free Knowledge Base covers the basics, and an internship gives you real work to apply them to.
