What Does a Data Science Intern Actually Do?

By K. Boopathikumar, CEO & Founder · 1 November 2026 · 3 min read

Many students imagine data science as building clever AI models all day. In most internships, the work is more down to earth, and more useful to learn.

A large share of the time goes on cleaning data: fixing missing values, removing duplicates and working out what each column really means.

Next comes exploring. You group, count and chart the data to answer simple questions, such as which product sells most in which month.

Models come later, and a simple one that people can understand often beats a complex one. You must also learn to explain your result in plain words to someone who does not code.

Prepare with Python, SQL and basic statistics. Take one public dataset, ask one real question and write down what you found.
