How to Prepare for a Group Discussion

By K. Boopathikumar, CEO & Founder · 1 November 2026 · 3 min read

Many companies use group discussions to see how you behave with others. The person who talks the most is not always the one selected.

Read about common topics, such as AI and jobs, online education and social media. Prepare a point for each side, as you may have to argue either.

If you can, open with a clear point or a simple definition. If you cannot, add something new later. A short, sensible point beats a long, empty one.

Listen, and refer to what others said. Saying "I agree with that point, and I would add" shows maturity. Never interrupt or attack a person.

Help the group stay on topic, and try to sum up at the end. Practise with friends, and take turns watching for who listens well.
