How to Answer "Tell Me About Yourself" in a Fresher Interview
By K. Boopathikumar, CEO & Founder · 1 November 2026 · 4 min read
Almost every interview starts with this question. It is not a request for your life story. The interviewer wants to know, in about a minute, why you suit this role.
Use a simple structure
Answer in three short parts:
- Present: what you are studying and what you are interested in
- Proof: one project or internship, and what you did in it
- Future: why this role interests you
A sample answer
Change this to match your own story, and never copy it word for word:
"I am a final-year CSE student, and I enjoy building web applications. In my internship, I built an attendance page and fixed a bug where duplicate records were being saved. That taught me to test edge cases. I want to join a team where I can keep building real products, which is why this role interests me."
Mistakes to avoid
- Repeating your resume line by line
- Talking about family details the job does not need
- Memorising an answer and sounding like a machine
- Mentioning a project you cannot explain
Practise aloud
Say it to a friend or record yourself. Keep it close to a minute. Prepare for the next question too, because it will probably be about the project you mentioned. Our guide to explaining your project will help.
