Cybersecurity for Beginners: Where to Start

Cybersecurity attracts students with exciting videos of hacking tools. Real security work depends on understanding how systems work first.
Start with networks: IP addresses, DNS, HTTP and ports. Then learn basic Linux commands. Without these, tools only give you results you cannot understand.
Next, learn how web applications fail. The OWASP Top Ten is a free list of common weaknesses, such as broken access control and injection.
Practise only on systems made for practice, such as deliberately vulnerable training labs. Testing someone else's website without written permission can be a crime, even if you mean well.
Security is also a defensive job. Reading logs, fixing weaknesses and writing clear reports are as valuable as finding a bug.
