Abstract

ESP32 S3 Nes Emulator By DSN is an open-source Internet of Things (IoT) project. In this repo I will share with you Nes emulator project. Esp32 based. This repo based on esp nofrendo. But I really too much work and upgraded it Original Repo : https://github.com/espressif/esp32-nesemu/tree/master/components/nofrendo. It is built using C, Arduino, ESP32. Key capabilities include: Full Speed Emulation: Runs NES games smoothly thanks to the ESP32-S3's dual-core power; High-Quality Audio: Crystal clear game sounds using the MAX98357A I2S amplifier; Storage: Load hundreds of ROMs from a Micro SD Card. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the GNU General Public License v3.0, making it a useful reference for students building an Internet of Things (IoT) mini project or final-year project.

1. Introduction

This repo based on esp nofrendo. But I really too much work and upgraded it Original Repo : https://github.com/espressif/esp32-nesemu/tree/master/components/nofrendo

A high-performance, DIY handheld NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) emulator powered by the ESP32-S3 microcontroller. This project features high-quality audio via I2S, smooth rendering on an ST7789 display, and games loaded directly from an SD card.

2. Objective

In this repo I will share with you Nes emulator project. Esp32 based

This project demonstrates how C, Arduino, ESP32 can be applied to a real-world Internet of Things (IoT) problem.

3. Key Features / Modules

  • Full Speed Emulation: Runs NES games smoothly thanks to the ESP32-S3's dual-core power.
  • High-Quality Audio: Crystal clear game sounds using the MAX98357A I2S amplifier.
  • Storage: Load hundreds of ROMs from a Micro SD Card.
  • Display: Vibrant colors using the ST7789 IPS TFT display.
  • Controls: Full 8-button support (D-Pad + A/B + Start/Select).

4. Technology Stack

CArduinoESP32
  • Microcontroller: ESP32-S3 (DevKit or bare module)
  • Display: ST7789 SPI TFT Module (e.g., 1.69")
  • Audio: MAX98357A I2S Amplifier Module + 3W 4Ω Speaker
  • Storage: Micro SD Card Reader Module + Micro SD Card (formatted FAT32)
  • Controls: 8x Tactile Push Buttons (6x6mm)
  • Power: LiPo Battery & Charging Circuit (Optional/TP4056)
  • Wires & Perfboard: For connections.

5. System Requirements

General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.

  • Arduino IDE / PlatformIO or a C compiler (gcc)
  • Target board where applicable
  • Git (to clone the repository)

6. Installation & Setup

git clone https://github.com/derdacavga/Esp32-S3-nes-emulator-by-DSN.git
cd Esp32-S3-nes-emulator-by-DSN
  1. Format your Micro SD card to FAT32.
  2. Copy your .nes game files into root folder.
  3. Insert the SD card into the module.
  4. Clone the Repository:
  5. Open in IDE:
  6. Open the project using Arduino IDE.
  7. Install Libraries:
  8. Ensure you have installed the necessary libraries (e.g., Audio, etc.) library.properties.
git clone [https://github.com/derdacavga/Esp32-S3-nes-emulator-by-DSN.git](https://github.com/derdacavga/Esp32-S3-nes-emulator-by-DSN.git)

Full setup instructions are in the project README.

7. Future Enhancements

Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.

  • Add a mobile dashboard using Blynk or Firebase
  • Store readings in a cloud database for history charts
  • Add alerts via SMS / Telegram when thresholds are crossed

8. Viva / Review Questions

Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.

  1. Which microcontroller / board and sensors are used and why?
  2. How does the device send data (Wi-Fi, MQTT, HTTP, Bluetooth)?
  3. Where is the sensor data stored and visualised?
  4. How is power consumption managed?
  5. How would you secure the device and its communication?

9. Source Code & License
