Abstract
ESP32 RTSPServer is an open-source Internet of Things (IoT) project. Esp32 Multiple Client RTSP Server with Video, Audio & Subtitles. ESP32-RTSPServer Library is for the ESP32, designed to stream video, audio, and subtitles. This library allows you to easily create an RTSP server for streaming multimedia content using an ESP32. It is built using C++, Arduino, ESP32. Key capabilities include: Authentication: Able to set user and password for RTSP Stream; Multiple Clients: Multiple clients for multicast or for all transports with a define override; Video Streaming: Stream video from the ESP32 camera. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT License, making it a useful reference for students building an Internet of Things (IoT) mini project or final-year project.
1. Introduction
ESP32-RTSPServer Library is for the ESP32, designed to stream video, audio, and subtitles. This library allows you to easily create an RTSP server for streaming multimedia content using an ESP32. It supports various transport types and integrates with the ESP32 camera and I2S audio interfaces.
If this library has been useful to you, please consider donating or sponsoring to support its development and maintenance. Your contributions help ensure that this project continues to improve and stay up-to-date, and also support future projects.
2. Objective
Esp32 Multiple Client RTSP Server with Video, Audio & Subtitles
This project demonstrates how C++, Arduino, ESP32 can be applied to a real-world Internet of Things (IoT) problem.
3. Key Features / Modules
- Authentication: Able to set user and password for RTSP Stream
- Multiple Clients: Multiple clients for multicast or for all transports with a define override
- Video Streaming: Stream video from the ESP32 camera.
- Audio Streaming: Stream audio using I2S.
- Subtitles: Stream subtitles alongside video and audio.
- Transport Types: Supports multiple transport types, including video-only, audio-only, and combined streams.
- Protocols: Stream multicast, unicast UDP, TCP and HTTP Tunnel (TCP and HTTP is Slower).
4. Technology Stack
5. System Requirements
General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.
- Arduino IDE / PlatformIO or a C++ compiler (g++)
- Target board (e.g. Arduino, ESP32) where applicable
- Git (to clone the repository)
6. Installation & Setup
git clone https://github.com/rjsachse/ESP32-RTSPServer.git
cd ESP32-RTSPServer- Manual Installation:
- Download the library from GitHub.
- Unzip the downloaded file.
- Move the ESP32-RTSPServer folder to your Arduino libraries directory (usually Documents/Arduino/libraries).
- Library Manager:
- Open the Arduino IDE.
- Search for ESP32-RTSPServer
- Go to Sketch -> Include Library -> Add .ZIP Library....
Full setup instructions are in the project README.
7. Future Enhancements
Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.
- Add a mobile dashboard using Blynk or Firebase
- Store readings in a cloud database for history charts
- Add alerts via SMS / Telegram when thresholds are crossed
8. Viva / Review Questions
Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.
- Which microcontroller / board and sensors are used and why?
- How does the device send data (Wi-Fi, MQTT, HTTP, Bluetooth)?
- Where is the sensor data stored and visualised?
- How is power consumption managed?
- How would you secure the device and its communication?
