Abstract

4money is an open-source Mobile App Development project. 🍐 An expense tracking app powered by Supabase and PowerSync. It's not yet live, but the code has interesting solutions. I'm building an expense tracking app inspired by 1Money, which was very nice but got screwed up. It is built using Kotlin. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the GNU General Public License v3.0, making it a useful reference for students building a Mobile App Development mini project or final-year project.

1. Introduction

I'm building an expense tracking app inspired by 1Money, which was very nice but got screwed up.

The bar for such applications is quite high. My current goal is not to build a general purpose expense tracker for wide audience, but only to cover the needs of my family and have some fun meanwhile. It's also my first Compose app, so I am actively learning.

2. Objective

🍐 An expense tracking app powered by Supabase and PowerSync. It's not yet live, but the code has interesting solutions

This project demonstrates how Kotlin can be applied to a real-world Mobile App Development problem.

4. Technology Stack

Kotlin
  • Compose UI with Compose Unstyled instead of Material
  • Flow & coroutines for concurrency
  • Koin for dependency injection
  • Supabase as a backend
  • PowerSync for local-first data storage and synchronization
  • SQLDelight for local app database
  • kotlin-logging & logback-android for logging

5. System Requirements

General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.

  • Android Studio (latest)
  • JDK 17
  • Android device or emulator
  • Git (to clone the repository)

6. Installation & Setup

git clone https://github.com/Radiokot/4money.git
cd 4money

Full setup instructions are in the project README.

7. Future Enhancements

Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.

  • Add push notifications with Firebase Cloud Messaging
  • Add offline support with local caching
  • Publish an internal test build on the Play Store

8. Viva / Review Questions

Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.

  1. Which framework is used and why (native vs cross-platform)?
  2. How is app state managed across screens?
  3. Where is the data stored — locally, Firebase or a REST backend?
  4. How are permissions (camera, location, storage) handled?
  5. How would you publish this app to the Play Store / App Store?

9. Source Code & License

This project is developed by Radiokot and published on GitHub under the GNU General Public License v3.0. Please follow the license terms and credit the original author when you use or modify this code.
