The shell and the terminal

Use the Bash shell to control a computer with commands.

📖 Key ideas

  1. A shell reads commands and runs programs; Bash is the most common on Linux.
  2. The terminal is the window where you type commands.
  3. Commands have options and arguments: ls -l /home.
  4. Use man ls or ls --help for help.
  5. Tab completes names; up arrow recalls history.
💡 Real-life example: The shell is a waiter: you speak the order (command) and it brings what the kitchen (OS) makes.
