IPv6 basics

Understand IPv6 addresses and notation.

📖 Key ideas

  1. IPv6 addresses are 128 bits written in 8 groups of hex: 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001.
  2. Shorten: drop leading zeros and replace one run of zero groups with :: → 2001:db8::1.
  3. Common prefix for a LAN: /64.
  4. Address types: global unicast (2000::/3), link-local (fe80::/10), loopback (::1).
  5. SLAAC lets devices configure their own addresses.
💡 Real-life example: IPv6 is moving from 10-digit phone numbers to 40-digit ones: enough for every grain of sand.
