What is a database?

A database stores data in an organised way; a DBMS is the software that manages it.

📖 Key ideas

  1. A database is an organised collection of data.
  2. A DBMS (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server) stores, protects and queries it.
  3. Relational databases keep data in tables of rows and columns.
  4. SQL is the language to talk to relational databases.
  5. Compared with files, a DBMS gives security, concurrency, backups and less duplication.
💡 Real-life example: A database is a well-organised college office: every student file has a place, and the clerk (DBMS) finds any file fast.
