API testing basics

Test the backend directly through its API.

📖 Key ideas

  1. APIs let apps exchange data, usually JSON over HTTP.
  2. API tests check status codes, response bodies, headers and speed.
  3. API tests are faster and more stable than UI tests.
  4. Common methods: GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE.
  5. Status codes: 200 OK, 201 Created, 400 Bad Request, 401, 403, 404, 500.
💡 Real-life example: API testing is checking the kitchen directly instead of judging only from the dining room.
