Designing algorithms in practice

Choose the right technique for real problems.

📖 Key ideas

  1. Identify problem type: search, optimisation, counting, path.
  2. Check constraints to choose acceptable complexity (n ≤ 10^5 → O(n log n)).
  3. Try simple solutions, then improve with the right paradigm.
  4. Prove correctness and test edge cases.
  5. Practise with contests and textbook problems (CLRS).
💡 Real-life example: Algorithm design is a doctor diagnosing: identify symptoms (constraints) before prescribing treatment (technique).
ConstraintsLimits on input size and time
ParadigmGeneral approach like DP or greedy
Edge caseUnusual input
