Abstract

Volvo240 Digital Dash is an open-source Internet of Things (IoT) project. Volvo 240 Digital Dash Project. It's not much, but its honest work. Volvo 240 Digital Dash Project. Designed to use existing dash connectors (circular connectors w/ 2mm pins, vehicle speed sensor (VSS) connector, and various spade connectors) to minimize extra wiring effort and installation of superfluous sensors. It is built using Makefile, Raspberry Pi. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT License, making it a useful reference for students building an Internet of Things (IoT) mini project or final-year project.

1. Introduction

Volvo 240 Digital Dash Project. Designed to use existing dash connectors (circular connectors w/ 2mm pins, vehicle speed sensor (VSS) connector, and various spade connectors) to minimize extra wiring effort and installation of superfluous sensors.

One of the main goals of the project was to use the existing Volvo 240 connectors. The only additional connectors and wiring needed are for sensors that weren't available on the stock main dash (oil pressure, oil temperature, vacuum/boost pressure, etc). Dash lights (low oil pressure, battery voltage, parking brake, high beams, etc) are functional as well as turn indicators. Fuel level and coolant temperature are functional. The hardware supports the addition of common accessory sensors such as oil pressure, oil temperature, manifold absolute pressure, and ambient temperature.

2. Objective

Volvo 240 Digital Dash Project. It's not much, but its honest work.

This project demonstrates how Makefile, Raspberry Pi can be applied to a real-world Internet of Things (IoT) problem.

4. Technology Stack

MakefileRaspberry Pi
  • Raspberry Pi 3 or Raspberry Pi 4/400
  • 12.3" bar TFT LCD
  • Qt Quick w/ EGLFS project to display renders of gauges
  • Buildroot linux to cut down on footprint and boot time
  • i2c/spi adc interface for reading temp, fuel, speed, etc sensors
  • i2c IO expander for warning lights
  • Raspberry Pi daughter board to read various sensors.
  • DC/DC power supply for screen, pi and sensor supplies, if necessary

5. System Requirements

General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.

  • See the project README for exact requirements
  • Git (to clone the repository)

6. Installation & Setup

git clone https://github.com/whitfijs-jw/Volvo240-DigitalDash.git
cd Volvo240-DigitalDash

Full setup instructions are in the project README.

7. Future Enhancements

Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.

  • Add a mobile dashboard using Blynk or Firebase
  • Store readings in a cloud database for history charts
  • Add alerts via SMS / Telegram when thresholds are crossed

8. Viva / Review Questions

Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.

  1. Which microcontroller / board and sensors are used and why?
  2. How does the device send data (Wi-Fi, MQTT, HTTP, Bluetooth)?
  3. Where is the sensor data stored and visualised?
  4. How is power consumption managed?
  5. How would you secure the device and its communication?
