Abstract
Smart Dustbin is an open-source Internet of Things (IoT) project. Mini Project for course Energy Management for IoT Devices. The Smart Dustbin is designed to streamline the waste disposal process, making it hands-free and intelligent. It's perfectly suited for busy public spaces, reducing the need to touch waste bins and promoting efficient waste sorting and recycling. It is built using C++. Key capabilities include: Automatic Lid Opening : Opens the lid automatically as someone approaches, using an ultrasonic sensor; Waste Segregation : Separates waste into biodegradable, hazardous, and non-biodegradable categories via voice commands; Fill Level Monitoring : Uses sensors to monitor how full the bin is and alerts when it's time to be emptied. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT License, making it a useful reference for students building an Internet of Things (IoT) mini project or final-year project.
1. Introduction
The Smart Dustbin is designed to streamline the waste disposal process, making it hands-free and intelligent. It's perfectly suited for busy public spaces, reducing the need to touch waste bins and promoting efficient waste sorting and recycling.
The Smart Dustbin project is a cutting-edge waste management solution that leverages advanced technology to automate waste disposal, enhance environmental sustainability, and ensure hygiene. Developed at the SRM Institute of Science and Technology, this innovative system utilizes a combination of sensors, microcontrollers, IoT connectivity, and voice recognition to provide a smarter waste management solution on campus.
2. Objective
Mini Project for course Energy Management for IoT Devices
This project demonstrates how C++ can be applied to a real-world Internet of Things (IoT) problem.
3. Key Features / Modules
- Automatic Lid Opening : Opens the lid automatically as someone approaches, using an ultrasonic sensor.
- Waste Segregation : Separates waste into biodegradable, hazardous, and non-biodegradable categories via voice commands.
- Fill Level Monitoring : Uses sensors to monitor how full the bin is and alerts when it's time to be emptied.
- Voice Command Recognition : Allows for hands-free operation with simple voice commands.
- Solar-Powered : Utilizes solar panels for an eco-friendly power source.
- IoT Connectivity : Integrates with Blynk for remote monitoring and user notifications.
4. Technology Stack
- Arduino Microcontroller
- Ultrasonic Sensors
- Servo Motors
- Microphone
- Solar Panel
- Rechargeable Battery
- LED Indicators/Buzzers
- Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Module
5. System Requirements
General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.
- Arduino IDE / PlatformIO or a C++ compiler (g++)
- Target board (e.g. Arduino, ESP32) where applicable
- Git (to clone the repository)
6. Installation & Setup
git clone https://github.com/footcricket05/SmartDustbin.git
cd SmartDustbin- Assemble the hardware as per the system architecture.
- Install the Arduino IDE and the necessary libraries.
- Upload the provided code to the Arduino.
- Configure the Blynk app for IoT connectivity.
- Position the dustbin appropriately, ensuring good exposure for the solar panels.
Full setup instructions are in the project README.
7. Future Enhancements
Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.
- Add a mobile dashboard using Blynk or Firebase
- Store readings in a cloud database for history charts
- Add alerts via SMS / Telegram when thresholds are crossed
8. Viva / Review Questions
Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.
- Which microcontroller / board and sensors are used and why?
- How does the device send data (Wi-Fi, MQTT, HTTP, Bluetooth)?
- Where is the sensor data stored and visualised?
- How is power consumption managed?
- How would you secure the device and its communication?
