Abstract
Smart Dustbin is an open-source Internet of Things (IoT) project. This project is a Smart Dustbin simulation developed using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It demonstrates the concept of an automatic, touch-free dustbin that opens its lid when a user approaches and closes it after a short delay. The project helps beginners understand automation concepts and basic front-end development. The Smart Dustbin automatically opens its lid when a user comes near and closes it after a short delay. This project simulates the real-world working of a sensor-based dustbin using web technologies. It is built using JavaScript. Key capabilities include: Automatic lid opening simulation; Smooth lid animation; Touch-free interaction concept. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the Apache License 2.0, making it a useful reference for students building an Internet of Things (IoT) mini project or final-year project.
1. Introduction
The Smart Dustbin automatically opens its lid when a user comes near and closes it after a short delay. This project simulates the real-world working of a sensor-based dustbin using web technologies.
A simple Smart Dustbin simulation built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript that demonstrates the concept of automatic lid opening when a user approaches the dustbin. This project is inspired by IoT-based smart waste management systems and is designed for beginners.
2. Objective
This project demonstrates how JavaScript can be applied to a real-world Internet of Things (IoT) problem.
3. Key Features / Modules
- Automatic lid opening simulation

7. Future Enhancements
Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.
- Add a mobile dashboard using Blynk or Firebase
- Store readings in a cloud database for history charts
- Add alerts via SMS / Telegram when thresholds are crossed
8. Viva / Review Questions
Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.
- Which microcontroller / board and sensors are used and why?
- How does the device send data (Wi-Fi, MQTT, HTTP, Bluetooth)?
- Where is the sensor data stored and visualised?
- How is power consumption managed?
- How would you secure the device and its communication?
