Abstract
Pubnub Rpi Smart Parking is an open-source Internet of Things (IoT) project. Smart Parking System based on Raspberry Pi with ATMega8 and HC-SR04. Smart Parking System based on Raspberry Pi and PubNub for providing realtime updates on parking availability using the PubNub C-Core SDK. It is built using Java. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT License, making it a useful reference for students building an Internet of Things (IoT) mini project or final-year project.
1. Introduction
Smart Parking System based on Raspberry Pi and PubNub for providing realtime updates on parking availability using the PubNub C-Core SDK.
##OVERVIEW This project demonstrates how we can build an application on Raspberry Pi which can control a set of HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensors, via ATMega8 chip to detect the availability of a parking slot and update this information on a mobile app using the PubNub's realtime data stream network. This application makes use of the new PubNub C-Core SDK on the device side and Javascript client SDK on the mobile app.
##INTRODUCTION This application is assumed to be installed in a public parking space where each parking slot is monitored using a HC-SR04 ultrsonic sensor connected to ATMega8 and ATMega8 connected with a Raspberry Pi via the UART interface.
2. Objective
Smart Parking System based on Raspberry Pi with ATMega8 and HC-SR04
This project demonstrates how Java can be applied to a real-world Internet of Things (IoT) problem.

7. Future Enhancements
Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.
- Add a mobile dashboard using Blynk or Firebase
- Store readings in a cloud database for history charts
- Add alerts via SMS / Telegram when thresholds are crossed
8. Viva / Review Questions
Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.
- Which microcontroller / board and sensors are used and why?
- How does the device send data (Wi-Fi, MQTT, HTTP, Bluetooth)?
- Where is the sensor data stored and visualised?
- How is power consumption managed?
- How would you secure the device and its communication?
