Abstract

Pi1541io is an open-source Internet of Things (IoT) project. Raspberry Pi extension board for the PI1541 project. This is an IO adapter board for the Raspberry Pi 3, based on the awesome Pi1541 project by Steve White. It is currently very much work in progress. It is built using HTML, Raspberry Pi. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 4.0 International, making it a useful reference for students building an Internet of Things (IoT) mini project or final-year project.

1. Introduction

This is an IO adapter board for the Raspberry Pi 3, based on the awesome Pi1541 project by Steve White. It is currently very much work in progress. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Details of the adapter board development are documented on hackup.net. The Gerber files for the latest stable revision are included in the repository. Also, the boards are ready to be ordered directly from PCBWay or DirtyPCBs.

This revision of the board resolves the I2C power supply issues of the previous version. All relevant aspects of the I2C header must now be configured using solder bridges on the bottom side of the PCB.

2. Objective

Raspberry Pi extension board for the PI1541 project.

This project demonstrates how HTML, Raspberry Pi can be applied to a real-world Internet of Things (IoT) problem.

4. Technology Stack

HTMLRaspberry Pi

5. System Requirements

General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.

  • A modern web browser
  • VS Code or any code editor
  • Git (to clone the repository)

6. Installation & Setup

git clone https://github.com/hackup/Pi1541io.git
cd Pi1541io

Full setup instructions are in the project README.

7. Future Enhancements

Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.

  • Add a mobile dashboard using Blynk or Firebase
  • Store readings in a cloud database for history charts
  • Add alerts via SMS / Telegram when thresholds are crossed

8. Viva / Review Questions

Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.

  1. Which microcontroller / board and sensors are used and why?
  2. How does the device send data (Wi-Fi, MQTT, HTTP, Bluetooth)?
  3. Where is the sensor data stored and visualised?
  4. How is power consumption managed?
  5. How would you secure the device and its communication?
