Abstract

LD Toy Pad Emulator is an open-source Internet of Things (IoT) project. Toy Pad Emulator for Lego Dimensions (Unofficial Fan Project). Allows you to connect an emulated Toy Pad to your PC or video-game console. It is built using JavaScript, Raspberry Pi, Node.js. Key capabilities include: Confirmed working on Cemu, real Wii U, RPCS3, real PS3, real PS4 and real PS5; Supports all available characters and vehicles; Saves vehicle upgrades. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT License, making it a useful reference for students building an Internet of Things (IoT) mini project or final-year project.

1. Introduction

Allows you to connect an emulated Toy Pad to your PC or video-game console.

2. Objective

Toy Pad Emulator for Lego Dimensions (Unofficial Fan Project)

This project demonstrates how JavaScript, Raspberry Pi, Node.js can be applied to a real-world Internet of Things (IoT) problem.

3. Key Features / Modules

  • Confirmed working on Cemu, real Wii U, RPCS3, real PS3, real PS4 and real PS5
  • Supports all available characters and vehicles
  • Saves vehicle upgrades
  • Displays the Toy Pad's light effects
  • Supports smart scrolling for mobile devices
  • Can be run in a virtual machine on Windows, macOS and Linux
  • No copyrighted game files are required, nor are any included
  • Can be configured easily by following the instructions below

4. Technology Stack

JavaScriptRaspberry PiNode.js

5. System Requirements

General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.

  • Node.js (LTS) and npm
  • A modern web browser
  • VS Code or any code editor
  • Git (to clone the repository)

6. Installation & Setup

git clone https://github.com/Berny23/LD-ToyPad-Emulator.git
cd LD-ToyPad-Emulator
  1. Start the virtual machine if it's not already running. Then start the VirtualHere USB Client and double click on LEGO READER V2.10.
  2. Run the emulator server with this command if you are in the correct folder (otherwise run cd LD-ToyPad-Emulator first):
  3. Type http://debian in a browser to use the emulator.
  4. Finally, start your console emulator and the game itself (e.g. Cemu).
  5. Flash Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye (Lite, either 32-bit for the Zero (W) or 64-bit for RPi 4/5) on a Micro-SD card. Newer Debian versions than Bullseye are currently not working.
  6. Connect your device to your PC via USB cable (don't use the port on the edge of the Pi Zero!).
  7. Use SSH to run the following command (Don't know the IP address? Try this IP scanner.) - this will prepare your Raspberry Pi to work as a USB gadget:
  8. Reboot you device with this command:
npm run start
curl -sSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Berny23/LD-ToyPad-Emulator/master/pi_setup.sh | bash
sudo shutdown -r now
podman pull \
  ghcr.io/berny23/ld-toypad-emulator:latest\
  --platform=linux/your-platform \
  .

Full setup instructions are in the project README.

7. Future Enhancements

Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.

  • Add a mobile dashboard using Blynk or Firebase
  • Store readings in a cloud database for history charts
  • Add alerts via SMS / Telegram when thresholds are crossed

8. Viva / Review Questions

Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.

  1. Which microcontroller / board and sensors are used and why?
  2. How does the device send data (Wi-Fi, MQTT, HTTP, Bluetooth)?
  3. Where is the sensor data stored and visualised?
  4. How is power consumption managed?
  5. How would you secure the device and its communication?

9. Source Code & License
