Abstract

Green Ecolution is an open-source Internet of Things (IoT) project. Smart irrigation for urban trees: LoRaWAN soil sensors reveal which trees actually need water, then the planner turns that into optimized watering routes and fleet schedules for municipal green-space teams. Urban green spaces need water - but how much, and when? City maintenance teams often drive fixed routes, watering trees on schedule rather than based on actual need. It is built using TypeScript, MQTT, React. Key capabilities include: Tree management - Track trees and tree clusters, monitor their watering status; Sensor integration - Receive soil moisture data via LoRaWAN/MQTT in real-time; Route optimization - Generate efficient watering routes using Valhalla + Streamlet. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0, making it a useful reference for students building an Internet of Things (IoT) mini project or final-year project.

1. Introduction

Urban green spaces need water - but how much, and when? City maintenance teams often drive fixed routes, watering trees on schedule rather than based on actual need. This wastes water, fuel, and staff time.

2. Objective

Smart irrigation for urban trees: LoRaWAN soil sensors reveal which trees actually need water, then the planner turns that into optimized watering routes and fleet schedules for municipal green-space teams.

This project demonstrates how TypeScript, MQTT, React can be applied to a real-world Internet of Things (IoT) problem.

3. Key Features / Modules

  • Tree management - Track trees and tree clusters, monitor their watering status
  • Sensor integration - Receive soil moisture data via LoRaWAN/MQTT in real-time
  • Route optimization - Generate efficient watering routes using Valhalla + Streamlet
  • Fleet management - Manage vehicles, assign drivers, track watering plans
  • Analytics - Evaluate water consumption and team performance

4. Technology Stack

5. System Requirements

General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.

  • Node.js (LTS) and npm / yarn / pnpm
  • VS Code or any code editor
  • Git (to clone the repository)

6. Installation & Setup

git clone https://github.com/green-ecolution/green-ecolution.git
cd green-ecolution
just infra-up # Start infra (Postgres, Keycloak, Traefik, Valhalla, Streamlet)
just migrate-up # Apply database migrations
just run-dev # Run backend (hot reload) + frontend
just setup # cargo fetch + pnpm install + build frontend workspace packages + domain WASM
just build # Build frontend + backend

Full setup instructions are in the project README.

7. Future Enhancements

Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.

  • Add a mobile dashboard using Blynk or Firebase
  • Store readings in a cloud database for history charts
  • Add alerts via SMS / Telegram when thresholds are crossed

8. Viva / Review Questions

Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.

  1. Which microcontroller / board and sensors are used and why?
  2. How does the device send data (Wi-Fi, MQTT, HTTP, Bluetooth)?
  3. Where is the sensor data stored and visualised?
  4. How is power consumption managed?
  5. How would you secure the device and its communication?

9. Source Code & License
