Abstract
Homie ESP8266 is an open-source Internet of Things (IoT) project. 💡 ESP8266 framework for Homie, a lightweight MQTT convention for the IoT. This branch of Homie for ESP8266 implements Homie 3.0.1 and adds support for ESP32. It is built using HTML, MQTT, ESP8266, Arduino. Key capabilities include: Automatic connection/reconnection to Wi-Fi/MQTT; JSON configuration file to configure the device; Cute HTTP API / Web UI / App to remotely send the configuration to the device and get information about it. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT License, making it a useful reference for students building an Internet of Things (IoT) mini project or final-year project.
1. Introduction
This branch of Homie for ESP8266 implements Homie 3.0.1 and adds support for ESP32.
The Git repository contains the development version of Homie for ESP8266. Stable releases are available on the releases page.
PlatformIO is an open source ecosystem for IoT development with cross platform build system, library manager and full support for Espressif ESP8266 development. It works on the popular host OS: Mac OS X, Windows, Linux 32/64, Linux ARM (like Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone, CubieBoard).
2. Objective
💡 ESP8266 framework for Homie, a lightweight MQTT convention for the IoT
This project demonstrates how HTML, MQTT, ESP8266 can be applied to a real-world Internet of Things (IoT) problem.
3. Key Features / Modules
- Automatic connection/reconnection to Wi-Fi/MQTT
- JSON configuration file to configure the device
- Cute HTTP API / Web UI / App to remotely send the configuration to the device and get information about it
- Custom settings
- OTA over MQTT
- Magic bytes
- Available in the PlatformIO registry
- Pretty straightforward sketches, a simple light for example: (TODO: adapt to V3)
4. Technology Stack
5. System Requirements
General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.
- A modern web browser
- VS Code or any code editor
- Git (to clone the repository)
6. Installation & Setup
git clone https://github.com/homieiot/homie-esp8266.git
cd homie-esp8266Full setup instructions are in the project README.
7. Future Enhancements
Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.
- Add a mobile dashboard using Blynk or Firebase
- Store readings in a cloud database for history charts
- Add alerts via SMS / Telegram when thresholds are crossed
8. Viva / Review Questions
Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.
- Which microcontroller / board and sensors are used and why?
- How does the device send data (Wi-Fi, MQTT, HTTP, Bluetooth)?
- Where is the sensor data stored and visualised?
- How is power consumption managed?
- How would you secure the device and its communication?
9. Source Code & License
