Abstract

AWS IOT Core Lorawan is an open-source Internet of Things (IoT) project. Quickly get started with AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN with sample solutions (binary decoding, device and gateway monitoring, downlink, dashboarding, provisioning automation). New to AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN? Consider step-by-step tutorial at https://iotwireless.workshop.aws. It is built using Python. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT No Attribution, making it a useful reference for students building an Internet of Things (IoT) mini project or final-year project.

1. Introduction

New to AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN? Consider step-by-step tutorial at https://iotwireless.workshop.aws

AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN enables you to set up a private LoRaWAN network by connecting your devices and gateways with no LoRaWAN Network Server setup required. This repository contains resources to quickly get started developing solutions using AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN. It includes samples for typical design patterns (binary decoder, downlink messaging, Thing shadow update) and fully functional applications (dashboards, condition monitoring and alarming) and automation and observability guidelines.

LoRaWAN devices typically send uplink payloads as binary encoded messages. Below you will find various options for an implementation of binary payload decoding.

2. Objective

Quickly get started with AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN with sample solutions (binary decoding, device and gateway monitoring, downlink, dashboarding, provisioning automation)

This project demonstrates how Python can be applied to a real-world Internet of Things (IoT) problem.

4. Technology Stack

Python

5. System Requirements

General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.

  • Python 3.8 or later
  • pip / virtualenv for dependencies
  • VS Code, PyCharm or Jupyter Notebook
  • Git (to clone the repository)

6. Installation & Setup

git clone https://github.com/aws-samples/aws-iot-core-lorawan.git
cd aws-iot-core-lorawan
  1. Visualizing telemetry and transmission metadata from LoRaWAN devices with Amazon Timestream and Grafana plugin
  2. Monitoring and alarming of soil moisture by using AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN and AWS IoT Events

Full setup instructions are in the project README.

7. Future Enhancements

Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.

  • Add a mobile dashboard using Blynk or Firebase
  • Store readings in a cloud database for history charts
  • Add alerts via SMS / Telegram when thresholds are crossed

8. Viva / Review Questions

Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.

  1. Which microcontroller / board and sensors are used and why?
  2. How does the device send data (Wi-Fi, MQTT, HTTP, Bluetooth)?
  3. Where is the sensor data stored and visualised?
  4. How is power consumption managed?
  5. How would you secure the device and its communication?

9. Source Code & License
