Terraform AWS Landing Zone

Terraform Module for AWS Landing Zone

Blockchain & Cloud ComputingHCLMPL-2.0

Abstract

Terraform AWS Landing Zone is an open-source Blockchain & Cloud Computing project. Terraform Module for AWS Landing Zone. AWS Landing Zone is a solution that helps customers more quickly set up a secure, multi-account AWS environment based on AWS best practices. This repository contains terraform module landing_zone that dynamically deploys components of AWS Landing Zone solution based on input list of .tfvars files. It is built using HCL, Terraform. Key capabilities include: root folder - module's standard terraform configuration; components - yaml-based and terraform compatible configurations; examples - different ways to combine components as part of this module. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, making it a useful reference for students building a Blockchain & Cloud Computing mini project or final-year project.

1. Introduction

AWS Landing Zone is a solution that helps customers more quickly set up a secure, multi-account AWS environment based on AWS best practices. This repository contains terraform module landing_zone that dynamically deploys components of AWS Landing Zone solution based on input list of .tfvars files.

Switch to branch terraform_v0.11 if you still using terraform v0.11.x and below.

2. Objective

Terraform Module for AWS Landing Zone

This project demonstrates how HCL, Terraform can be applied to a real-world Blockchain & Cloud Computing problem.

3. Key Features / Modules

  • root folder - module's standard terraform configuration
  • components - yaml-based and terraform compatible configurations
  • examples - different ways to combine components as part of this module
  • modules - standalone, reusable and production-ready modules
  • tests - set of automated tests to use in CI/CD pipelines
  • nodejs - referenced and validated here
  • terrahub - referenced and validated here
  • Change landing_zone_providers to values that describe your AWS Organization account
  • default reflects the default setup corresponding to AWS Organization account; add more providers by extending landing_zone_providers map with extra AWS accounts and/or AWS regions
  • account_id reflects the AWS account used to deploy AWS resources; prevents provisioning AWS resources into wrong AWS account in case of valid AWS credentials

4. Technology Stack

HCLTerraform
  • Multi-Account Structure
  • AWS Organization Account
  • Shared Services Account
  • Log Archive Account
  • Security Account
  • Account Vending Machine
  • User Access and Identity Management
  • Monitoring and Notifications

5. System Requirements

General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.

  • Terraform CLI
  • Cloud provider account (e.g. AWS) with CLI configured
  • Git (to clone the repository)

6. Installation & Setup

git clone https://github.com/MitocGroup/terraform-aws-landing-zone.git
cd terraform-aws-landing-zone

Full setup instructions are in the project README.

7. Future Enhancements

Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.

  • Add a CI/CD pipeline with GitHub Actions
  • Deploy to a public test network or cloud free tier
  • Add monitoring and cost alerts

8. Viva / Review Questions

Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.

  1. Why does this problem need a blockchain or cloud-native design?
  2. Explain the smart contract / infrastructure components and how they interact.
  3. How are gas costs or cloud costs kept under control?
  4. How is the system secured (keys, IAM, access control)?
  5. How would the solution scale to many more users?

9. Source Code & License
