Abstract

Library Management System is an open-source Full Stack Web Development project. :books: An automated library management system developed in Laravel 4.2 PHP MVC Framework. The backend of the system is developed on Laravel 4.2 PHP MVC Framework and requires PHP 5.6 with the appropriate MCrypt extension. The front end is built on Edmin Responsive Bootstrap Admin Template (Demo) which is built on Bootstrap v2.2.2 using jQuery and Underscore-Dot-JS. It is built using PHP, Bootstrap, Laravel. Key capabilities include: Librarians can be given their authorized login ID and password without which the system can not be accessed; Students can only access limited features, i.e., public access level features which include searching a book and student registration form; After logging in librarians can search for a specific book, book issue or student from the home panel. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT License, making it a useful reference for students building a Full Stack Web Development mini project or final-year project.

1. Introduction

The backend of the system is developed on Laravel 4.2 PHP MVC Framework and requires PHP 5.6 with the appropriate MCrypt extension. The front end is built on Edmin Responsive Bootstrap Admin Template (Demo) which is built on Bootstrap v2.2.2 using jQuery and Underscore-Dot-JS

2. Objective

:books: An automated library management system developed in Laravel 4.2 PHP MVC Framework

This project demonstrates how PHP, Bootstrap, Laravel can be applied to a real-world Full Stack Web Development problem.

3. Key Features / Modules

  • Librarians can be given their authorized login ID and password without which the system can not be accessed.
  • Students can only access limited features, i.e., public access level features which include searching a book and student registration form.
  • After logging in librarians can search for a specific book, book issue or student from the home panel.
  • Librarians need to make an entry for new books. To automate the process they simply need to enter the number of issues, then the Issue ID for each book issue is generated automatically.
  • The most important function of any library is to issue and return books. This system includes a panel to view all outstanding logs and a super simple panel to issue and return books for all librarians.

5. System Requirements

General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.

  • PHP 7.4+ with a web server (XAMPP / WAMP / LAMP)
  • MySQL / MariaDB
  • phpMyAdmin (optional)
  • Git (to clone the repository)

6. Installation & Setup

git clone https://github.com/prabhakar267/library-management-system.git
cd library-management-system
  1. Oracle provides detailed instructions to install MySQL on any Linux distribution. See "Installing MySQL on Linux" for details and instructions.
  2. Altneratively, you can probably install a working MySQL server that is compatible with this project by running:
  3. You may be prompted to choose a root password for MySQL during the installation.
  4. You should create a MySQL user for this project, create a database for this project, and may need to give the mysql user permissions to access the database. Instructions to configure the project are provided below.
  5. apt-get update
  6. apt-get install php5.6 php5.6-mcrypt
  7. git clone https://github.com/prabhakar267/library-management-system
  8. cd library-management-system

Full setup instructions are in the project README.

7. Future Enhancements

Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.

  • Add role-based access control
  • Deploy on a VPS or cPanel hosting with a custom domain
  • Add automated tests and a CI pipeline

8. Viva / Review Questions

Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.

  1. Explain the frontend, backend and database layers of this application.
  2. How is user authentication and authorisation implemented?
  3. Describe the main database tables / collections and their relationships.
  4. Which REST APIs or routes are exposed and what do they return?
  5. How would you deploy this application to production?
