Abstract
Speakeasy is an open-source Cybersecurity & Ethical Hacking project. **NOT MAINTAINED** Two-factor authentication for Node.js. One-time passcode generator (HOTP/TOTP) with support for Google Authenticator. Speakeasy is a one-time passcode generator, ideal for use in two-factor authentication, that supports Google Authenticator and other two-factor devices. It is built using JavaScript, Node.js. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT License, making it a useful reference for students building a Cybersecurity & Ethical Hacking mini project or final-year project.
1. Introduction
Speakeasy is a one-time passcode generator, ideal for use in two-factor authentication, that supports Google Authenticator and other two-factor devices.
Speakeasy implements one-time passcode generators as standardized by the [Initiative for Open Authentication (OATH)][oath]. The HMAC-Based One-Time Password (HOTP) algorithm defined by [RFC 4226][rfc4226] and the Time-Based One-time Password (TOTP) algorithm defined in [RFC 6238][rfc6238] are supported. This project incorporates code from [passcode][], originally a fork of Speakeasy, and [notp][].
This demo uses the generateSecret method of Speakeasy to generate a secret key, displays a Google Authenticator–compatible QR code which you can scan into your phone's two-factor app, and shows the token, which you can verify with your phone. Includes sample code. https://sedemo-mktb.rhcloud.com/
2. Objective
**NOT MAINTAINED** Two-factor authentication for Node.js. One-time passcode generator (HOTP/TOTP) with support for Google Authenticator.
This project demonstrates how JavaScript, Node.js can be applied to a real-world Cybersecurity & Ethical Hacking problem.
4. Technology Stack
5. System Requirements
General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.
- Node.js (LTS) and npm
- A modern web browser
- VS Code or any code editor
- Git (to clone the repository)
6. Installation & Setup
git clone https://github.com/speakeasyjs/speakeasy.git
cd speakeasy- Generate a secret
- Show a QR code for the user to scan in
- Authenticate the token for the first time
npm install --save speakeasyvar speakeasy = require("speakeasy");Full setup instructions are in the project README.
7. Future Enhancements
Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.
- Add logging and alert notifications (email / Telegram)
- Write a threat model document for the tool
- Package it with Docker for safe lab testing
8. Viva / Review Questions
Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.
- Which threat or attack does this project defend against?
- What detection or protection technique is used and what are its limits?
- How are false positives and false negatives handled?
- Which cryptographic algorithms or security standards are involved?
- What legal and ethical rules apply when testing a tool like this?
