Abstract

File Encryption Decryption is an open-source Cybersecurity & Ethical Hacking project. A robust file encryption and decryption system built in Assembly Language, ensuring data security with password protection and hidden file functionality. Includes features for password recovery and encrypted file management. This assembly language program was developed as an educational semester project for the Computer Organization and Assembly Language course. Its designed to handle basic file encryption and decryption using a simple XOR cipher. Users can input a file name, and the program will either encrypt or decrypt the file content based on the selected mode. It is built using Assembly. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT License, making it a useful reference for students building a Cybersecurity & Ethical Hacking mini project or final-year project.

1. Introduction

This assembly language program was developed as an educational semester project for the Computer Organization and Assembly Language course. Its designed to handle basic file encryption and decryption using a simple XOR cipher. Users can input a file name, and the program will either encrypt or decrypt the file content based on the selected mode.

2. Objective

A robust file encryption and decryption system built in Assembly Language, ensuring data security with password protection and hidden file functionality. Includes features for password recovery and encrypted file management.

This project demonstrates how Assembly can be applied to a real-world Cybersecurity & Ethical Hacking problem.

4. Technology Stack

Assembly

5. System Requirements

General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.

  • See the project README for exact requirements
  • Git (to clone the repository)

6. Installation & Setup

git clone https://github.com/JawadAhmadCS/File-Encryption-Decryption.git
cd File-Encryption-Decryption
  1. Assembly:
  2. Use an 8086 emulator to assemble and run the program. You can use EMU8086 or any other compatible emulator.
  3. File Location:
  4. Ensure that the file to be encrypted or decrypted is a .txt file located in the MyBuild folder (Typically found in: C:\Program Files\Emu8086\MyBuild).
  5. Execution:
  6. Run the program, input the file name (with extension), and follow the on-screen instructions to either encrypt or decrypt the file.

Full setup instructions are in the project README.

7. Future Enhancements

Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.

  • Add logging and alert notifications (email / Telegram)
  • Write a threat model document for the tool
  • Package it with Docker for safe lab testing

8. Viva / Review Questions

Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.

  1. Which threat or attack does this project defend against?
  2. What detection or protection technique is used and what are its limits?
  3. How are false positives and false negatives handled?
  4. Which cryptographic algorithms or security standards are involved?
  5. What legal and ethical rules apply when testing a tool like this?
