Sealer

Build, Share and Run Both Your Kubernetes Cluster and Distributed Applications (Project under CNCF)

Blockchain & Cloud ComputingGoApache-2.0

Abstract

Sealer is an open-source Blockchain & Cloud Computing project. Build, Share and Run Both Your Kubernetes Cluster and Distributed Applications (Project under CNCF). Sealer[ˈsiːlər] provides a new way of distributed application delivery which is reducing the difficulty and complexity by packaging Kubernetes cluster and all application's dependencies into one ClusterImage. It is built using Go, Kubernetes, Docker. Key capabilities include: Simplicity: Packing the distributed application into ClusterImage with few instructions; Efficiency: Launching the k8s-based application through ClusterImage in minutes; Scalability: Powerful cluster and image life cycle management, such as cluster scale, upgrade, image load, save and so on. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the Apache License 2.0, making it a useful reference for students building a Blockchain & Cloud Computing mini project or final-year project.

1. Introduction

Sealer[ˈsiːlər] provides a new way of distributed application delivery which is reducing the difficulty and complexity by packaging Kubernetes cluster and all application's dependencies into one ClusterImage.

We can write a Kubefile to build the ClusterImage, and use it to deliver your applications with embedded Kubernetes through Clusterfile.

2. Objective

Build, Share and Run Both Your Kubernetes Cluster and Distributed Applications (Project under CNCF)

This project demonstrates how Go, Kubernetes, Docker can be applied to a real-world Blockchain & Cloud Computing problem.

3. Key Features / Modules

  • Simplicity: Packing the distributed application into ClusterImage with few instructions.
  • Efficiency: Launching the k8s-based application through ClusterImage in minutes.
  • Scalability: Powerful cluster and image life cycle management, such as cluster scale, upgrade, image load, save and so on.
  • Compatibility: Multi-arch delivery Supporting. Such as AMD, ARM with common Linux distributions.
  • Iterative: Incremental operations on ClusterImage is like what container image behaves.

4. Technology Stack

GoKubernetesDocker

5. System Requirements

General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.

  • Go 1.20 or later
  • Git (to clone the repository)

6. Installation & Setup

git clone https://github.com/sealerio/sealer.git
cd sealer
#install Sealer binaries
wget https://github.com/sealerio/sealer/releases/download/v0.9.3/sealer-v0.9.3-linux-amd64.tar.gz && \
tar zxvf sealer-v0.9.3-linux-amd64.tar.gz && mv sealer /usr/bin
# run a kubernetes cluster
sealer run docker.io/sealerio/kubernetes:v1-22-15-sealerio-2 \
  --masters 192.168.0.2,192.168.0.3,192.168.0.4 \
  --nodes 192.168.0.5,192.168.0.6,192.168.0.7 --passwd xxx
sealer run sealer-io/nginx:latest
# check the pod
kubectl get pod -A

Full setup instructions are in the project README.

7. Future Enhancements

Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.

  • Add a CI/CD pipeline with GitHub Actions
  • Deploy to a public test network or cloud free tier
  • Add monitoring and cost alerts

8. Viva / Review Questions

Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.

  1. Why does this problem need a blockchain or cloud-native design?
  2. Explain the smart contract / infrastructure components and how they interact.
  3. How are gas costs or cloud costs kept under control?
  4. How is the system secured (keys, IAM, access control)?
  5. How would the solution scale to many more users?

9. Source Code & License

This project is developed by sealerio and published on GitHub under the Apache License 2.0. Please follow the license terms and credit the original author when you use or modify this code.
