Abstract
Django Keel is an open-source Blockchain & Cloud Computing project. A versatile, production-ready Django project template for any use case Build SaaS applications, API backends, web apps, or internal tools with one template. Django Keel is a comprehensive Copier template that adapts to your needs—whether you're building a multi-tenant SaaS with billing, a simple API backend, a traditional web app, or an internal corporate tool. One template, infinite possibilities. It is built using Jinja, Django, Ansible, Kubernetes, Next.js. Key capabilities include: HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) enabled in production, including SECURE_HSTS_PRELOAD; SSL redirect enforced in production; Secure cookies - Session and CSRF cookies are Secure, HttpOnly, SameSite=Lax in production. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT License, making it a useful reference for students building a Blockchain & Cloud Computing mini project or final-year project.
1. Introduction
Django Keel is a comprehensive Copier template that adapts to your needs—whether you're building a multi-tenant SaaS with billing, a simple API backend, a traditional web app, or an internal corporate tool. One template, infinite possibilities.
Just as a ship's keel allows it to sail anywhere, Django Keel enables you to deploy your application to any platform—Kubernetes, AWS, Fly.io, Render, or traditional servers.
Build SaaS applications, API backends, web apps, or internal tools with one template.
2. Objective
A versatile, production-ready Django project template for any use case Build SaaS applications, API backends, web apps, or internal tools with one template.
This project demonstrates how Jinja, Django, Ansible can be applied to a real-world Blockchain & Cloud Computing problem.
3. Key Features / Modules
- HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) enabled in production, including SECURE_HSTS_PRELOAD
- SSL redirect enforced in production
- Secure cookies - Session and CSRF cookies are Secure, HttpOnly, SameSite=Lax in production
- Hardening headers - X-Frame-Options: DENY, SECURE_CONTENT_TYPE_NOSNIFF
- Dependency audit tooling - pip-audit and safety installed as dev dependencies
- .env.example - Template for environment variables
- No secrets in repo - Environment-based configuration
- Multi-tenant teams (RBAC) - Full team management system
- Owner/Admin/Member roles
- Team invitations with email tokens
4. Technology Stack
5. System Requirements
General requirements for this technology stack — check the README for exact versions.
- See the project README for exact requirements
- Git (to clone the repository)
6. Installation & Setup
git clone https://github.com/CuriousLearner/django-keel.git
cd django-keel- Included - Always generated, core to every project
- Optional - Choose during project generation (some enabled by default)
- Planned - Coming in future releases
- Kubernetes (Enterprise-scale):
- Minimal Helm chart (deploy/k8s/helm// with deployment, service, ingress, and optional Celery worker templates)
- Kustomize overlays (dev/prod)
- PostgreSQL options: Managed (RDS recommended) or CloudNativePG operator
- AWS ECS Fargate (Serverless containers):
Full setup instructions are in the project README.
7. Future Enhancements
Suggested extensions you can add to make this your own project.
- Add a CI/CD pipeline with GitHub Actions
- Deploy to a public test network or cloud free tier
- Add monitoring and cost alerts
8. Viva / Review Questions
Common questions examiners ask for projects in this domain.
- Why does this problem need a blockchain or cloud-native design?
- Explain the smart contract / infrastructure components and how they interact.
- How are gas costs or cloud costs kept under control?
- How is the system secured (keys, IAM, access control)?
- How would the solution scale to many more users?
